Anyone who remembers the beloved Grand Staircase tradition of Evensong, knows that the staircase is the perfect place for a coronation. But, did you know that the Queen of Knowledge was not the only queen who presided over her court on the college steps?
The caption on this October 1948 photo from the La Grande Observer describes how Homecoming Queen Mary Roshak was “crowned in an elaborate ceremony on the Grand Staircase.”
The next year, 1949 Homecoming Royalty posed on the staircase.
