Every staircase needs a cat and every cat needs a staircase…
One of the many wonderful Grand Staircase memories people have shared with us is this one…
“I used to walk by this (the Grand Staircase) to high school every day and there was a Siamese/Tabby mix that would sit on the post and greet you. First Siamese Tabby mix I had ever seen. He was so pretty!”
Can’t you just imagine a cat perched atop one of the concrete pier caps at the bottom of the steps – the sphinx of EOU? What a lucky cat!
The Grand Staircase gnome…

Best idea ever…
Overheard: “You know, when the staircase is reconstructed, we’re going to need Slinkys.”

Just a guy, his lawnmower, and the Grand Staircase…
At first glance, this is just a nice “picture postcard” of the Grand Staircase c 1930s. However, look very closely and you’ll notice, on the right-hand side, a guy who appears to be leaning against a tree with what looks like a push lawnmower. Do you think he knew he was in this picture?

Deer…
Deer were frequently visitors to the Grand Staircase and no doubt formed their own cherished memories.

A friendly ghost…

Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers visit the Grand Staircase…

It’s easy to imagine that decades ago children played space invaders on the Grand Staircase with their Flash Gordon and Buck Roger’s ray guns (some of which could conveniently also be used as flashlights). Precursors to the laser guns of sci-fi adventures to come, these toys captured the imagination of generations.
How excited those children would have been if they’d known that one day real-life lasers would actually be used on the Grand Staircase. In October of 2016 a laser scan was completed on the structure. The information was gathered to ensure that, when funding became available, the Grand Staircase could be reconstructed to exactly match the appearance of the original. Unfortunately, that was not to be.
